Summary

Enlightening but too extreme

What a whimsical way of looking at minimalism and tidying up in general。If only the objects I was thanking for serving me well could interact with me the same way as seen in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, then I would be living my anime-cartoon-real-life crossover fantasy。 What a whimsical way of looking at minimalism and tidying up in general。If only the objects I was thanking for serving me well could interact with me the same way as seen in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, then I would be living my anime-cartoon-real-life crossover fantasy。 。。。more

Better than minimalism。 Changed the way I see my home。

Really helpful for people looking to tidy up。 The problems mentioned in book are more first world problems and probably required for them。The approach to the solution is what I liked。

Ok if you live a conventional lifestyle。 Not so great if you're a rural, eco-friendly, homeschooling family who pursues every interest to a satisfying depth。 Some of the ideas really took root and were helpful in beating the depression that comes with the daily mundane chores, and those kept it from being a waste of a read。 Ok if you live a conventional lifestyle。 Not so great if you're a rural, eco-friendly, homeschooling family who pursues every interest to a satisfying depth。 Some of the ideas really took root and were helpful in beating the depression that comes with the daily mundane chores, and those kept it from being a waste of a read。 。。。more

Might amend this rating when I actually follow her advice。

One year since I finished this book and it’s lessons still inspire my choices。 Does it spark joy? This book certainly does! The digital edition though。。。 wouldn’t want clutter!

I avoided this for a while because as an ADHD person, I have tried so many times to get organized and have always failed。 While I likely won’t follow every single bit of her method due to my own needs and executive dysfunction, I personally found this really helpful。

Helpful book for someone who's bogged down by the clutter on daily basis。 I chose to, of course, ignore the author's spirituality for the materialistic world。 I took what made sense and that helped, especially if one has limited space to live in, in a metropolitan city。 The gist of the book is: if a thing doesn't spark joy in you, it's out! You can filter based on practicality and usage of your things。 Take what you need from the book and ignore what didn't help。 Helpful book for someone who's bogged down by the clutter on daily basis。 I chose to, of course, ignore the author's spirituality for the materialistic world。 I took what made sense and that helped, especially if one has limited space to live in, in a metropolitan city。 The gist of the book is: if a thing doesn't spark joy in you, it's out! This book is garbage。 The author’s advice comes from a place of unacknowledged privilege, and she comes off as a pretentious, self-important, borderline narcissist。If it were possible, I would give this book zero stars。 I want those three hours of my life back。

I am amazed that this book is a best seller。

I was a hoarder as a kid, but moving internationally has made me realize how much stuff I used to collect。 Now I'm getting ready to move back to the states and I have the unique opportunity to make a fresh start。 However, because I personify items and because I can become stuck in the past, it's not always easy for me to throw things away。 (Despite wanting to。) This book is the nudge I needed to really start clearing things。 Just yesterday I'd taken a pair of pants out of my closet that I rarely I was a hoarder as a kid, but moving internationally has made me realize how much stuff I used to collect。 Now I'm getting ready to move back to the states and I have the unique opportunity to make a fresh start。 However, because I personify items and because I can become stuck in the past, it's not always easy for me to throw things away。 (Despite wanting to。) This book is the nudge I needed to really start clearing things。 Just yesterday I'd taken a pair of pants out of my closet that I rarely wear, hesitated, then put them back。 Today I think I'll go home, say thanks, and open the garbage bag。 。。。more

Definitely motivated me to keep getting rid of items that don’t spark joy! I love that it is a whole lifestyle and can lead people (and hopefully me) to make decisions more confidently and trust themselves more! I have a feeling I am about to own a lot less。。。!

My first review here。 Although there are some parts in it that don't conform with the ideology of the majority of readers, but I've read it in full and enjoyed it。I can't really say that what this book entails is life changing, but it has taught me many things which I'll carry on while tidying up my home。 My first review here。 Although there are some parts in it that don't conform with the ideology of the majority of readers, but I've read it in full and enjoyed it。I can't really say that what this book entails is life changing, but it has taught me many things which I'll carry on while tidying up my home。 。。。more

Can we just talk about the fact that Marie Kondo has been training for this her whole life? (3/5)

I expected this book to offer generic advice on how to ensure your home remained tidy。 While there are moments of instruction and guidance, overall, this book is more focused on encouraging the reader to develop a sense of respect and appreciation for their home, their belongings, and themselves。 I've certainly gleaned much more from this book than I originally expected and have enjoyed this quick read。 I expected this book to offer generic advice on how to ensure your home remained tidy。 While there are moments of instruction and guidance, overall, this book is more focused on encouraging the reader to develop a sense of respect and appreciation for their home, their belongings, and themselves。 I've certainly gleaned much more from this book than I originally expected and have enjoyed this quick read。 。。。more

Tidy up in one shot, and make it into a special event, rather than little by little, is a great way of learning tidying。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I did only make it halfway through。 I bought a used copy of this book because due to lockdown I was spending more time in my room at my parents house than in dorm。 And after almost a year I felt like being lost in all that stuff。At the beginning of the book (all the personal "I love cleaning up so much"-stories aside) some parts sounded actually helpful。 But I already managed to purge my stuff on my own in my old room and feel better and I found my own way of doing so and keeping the order。 So n I did only make it halfway through。 I bought a used copy of this book because due to lockdown I was spending more time in my room at my parents house than in dorm。 And after almost a year I felt like being lost in all that stuff。At the beginning of the book (all the personal "I love cleaning up so much"-stories aside) some parts sounded actually helpful。 But I already managed to purge my stuff on my own in my old room and feel better and I found my own way of doing so and keeping the order。 So no KonMari for me。And you know, the chapter about books really threw my bookdragons heart in a frenzy。And I did not stop from purging my BookCollection when I made my big clean up。 I sold four boxes minimum and still have a lot。 Try to take them away, I dare you。 I'm not just a Reader, or a Booklover。 I'm also a BookCollector。 As much as I tried to continue the book after this enraging chapter。。。 I couldn't。 Marie Kondos Book doesn't spark joy anymore。 She said throwing books away is okay, but I won't。 As much as I want to rip it apart as punishment for her ripping pages from her books, I won't I will sell it again to a book thrift store。 And get at least a little money back that I wasted on this nonsense。 。。。more

This was an interesting book and I had wanted to read it for a long time, but I think it ended up making me stressed about all my stuff and all the work it would take to wrangle it all。

“You will never use your spare buttons”。All of my possessions don’t always bring me joy, HOWEVER, throwing away that button hidden away at the back of my drawer certainly did spark immense joy。I listened to this while packing up my room to move。 I think most of us are already quite aware of Marie Kondo’s methods and I’ve never really been a fan of clutter so it wasn’t very revolutionary for me。 I was, however, inspired to get rid of a few extra things so it served its purpose。

Marie Kondo is a saint。

I never planned on reading this book。 In fact, I actively avoided both the book and the Netflix series after seeing the sheer amount of stuff people had and were throwing away。 It stresses me out to think about the environmental impacts of overconsumption and how much stuff ends up in the landfill。 But, when I found the book in a Little Free Library, I decided to give it a try in the hopes that Marie Kondo addresses the issue of overconsumption, how to properly rid your home of unwanted items, a I never planned on reading this book。 In fact, I actively avoided both the book and the Netflix series after seeing the sheer amount of stuff people had and were throwing away。 It stresses me out to think about the environmental impacts of overconsumption and how much stuff ends up in the landfill。 But, when I found the book in a Little Free Library, I decided to give it a try in the hopes that Marie Kondo addresses the issue of overconsumption, how to properly rid your home of unwanted items, and how to avoid falling into the same habits of overconsumption。 Unfortunately, she doesn’t。 Sure, you could argue that those who follow the KonMari Method will only buy things that “spark joy” in the future, thus reducing their consumption habits and environmental impact, but I find it really hard to believe that everyone sticks with it。 I hated how Kondo brags about the number of garbage bags she or her clients are able to fill and discard。 On the second page, for example, she says: “I have assisted individual clients who have thrown out two hundred 45-liter garbage bags in one go,” and near the end of the book she states: “The average amount discarded by a single person is easily twenty to thirty 45-liter bags, and for a family of three it’s closer to seventy bags。 The sum total of all the garbage so far would exceed twenty-eight thousand bags, and the number of items discarded must be over one million。” – and that’s just from her clients! Can you imagine how many more bags of garbage have been thrown out since her book and the Netflix series gained popularity and people began to use the KonMari Method on their own? I sincerely hope that every time she talks about discarding/throwing out stuff, she actually means that it is sold, given away to community members, or donated to thrift stores first, with sending stuff to landfill reserved for actual garbage。 The fact that she NEVER explicitly discusses proper disposal is a major issue for me, as those who read the book and follow her advice may just throw everything out without taking the time or putting in the effort to find stuff a new home first。 I am never going to speak to my items as if they are living beings, but I can appreciate that it works for her and for others without feeling the need to ridicule it as so many other reviewers have done。 Yes, I find it silly, but not nearly as ridiculous as some of Kondo’s claims about the guaranteed success of her method and the additional benefits that her clients have experienced and that she almost claims will happen to you too (such as losing weight, gaining clear/smooth skin, having a long-lost friend spontaneously reach out to you after you finish tidying, etc。)。 She admits that she does not have any scientific basis for her claims, yet she still makes them… And, of course, this wouldn’t be a review from a book lover without mentioning that I did not agree with her approach to decluttering books or her advice to only keep around 30 books or so in your house。 She tells me that I should not feel joy “when surrounded by piles of unread books that do not touch [my] heart,” but I do! I couldn’t imagine living in a house without books (or where books are hidden away in a closet), but I guess that just goes to show that each of us will have a different idea of what “sparks joy。” If you enjoyed this book and feel inspired to start decluttering your home, please do so in an environmentally responsible way as much as possible。 Do not just throw everything out and please take the time to examine your shopping/consumption habits so you don’t just end up accumulating more stuff。 。。。more

Will I have a place to keep it? Is it just gonna be crammed in my cabinet/closet? Am I just gonna buy it to donate it a few years from now? Does this really spark joy? ✨It also really is true that when your house is tidy, you have more time to enjoy yourself and be happy in your home。 Before I moved, I would never feel satisfied after spending the whole day cleaning out my closet。 And I would do it at least once every few months。 And now I know why。 If I could give people a life changing advice, it would be: read this book (and actually go tidy your house after, of course!) Tidying your house changes every other aspect of your life。 You can actually relax more, enjoy more, and live more。 。。。more
